Summary of Job Function: The Director of Patient Care leads a clinical service in a dynamic process of adaptation to service goals, changes in health care systems and response to customer demands. Fosters autonomy, accountability and professional/personal growth and development of staff. The essential characteristics necessary to meet standards and role expectations include: professionalism, humor, vision, trust, innovation, resourcefulness, collaboration, critical thinking. The Director is a person of influence who breaks down barriers. Is responsible for knowledge of the patient population served and assures awareness of ethical standards of practice as defined by the ANA code of ethics. Assures safety in practice and is inclusive of the principles of evidence based practice by maintaining a realization of own individual level of knowledge and experience and assumes responsibility for advancing knowledge of self and others of the patient care team by communication with and utilizing resource persons and programs available.

Responsible for supervising and directing the delegation of tasks to appropriate team members and collaborates with other interdisciplinary team members. Assures that all professional nurses and LPNs practice within their specific scope of practice as defined by the Nurse Practice Act and Regulatory standards. Is aware of and assures that all unlicensed personnel practice within the scope of practice outlined in their specific job description. Responsible for consistently setting and evaluating priorities through appropriate interventions with measurable outcomes toward improvement. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.

Insure that [unit/department/division] is in compliance with all applicable policies, laws and regulations.

Job Qualifications: BSN Degree. Master s Degree preferred. One to three years managerial experience preferred but not required. One to two years experience within specialty is required. Specialty may be required, according to the needs of the individual units. Demonstrated professional development over time (i.e. national certification, continuing education, etc.).

Current New Jersey RN Licensure required. National Certification preferred. BLS required. ACLS required within six (6) months of hire. PALS required within one (1) year of hire.
