UI Health is seeking a Medical Social Associate (Certified Child Life Specialist) to join our Hospital Emergency Services team. This role directs the Child Life Program, with a focus on the administrative and direct patient care tasks, of helping children and families cope and gain control over their medical experiences in Emergency Department and may support additional locations in the hospital.
Duties & Responsibilities: - Provides specialized Child life support to individuals participating in the approved Child Life Program, using a variety of resources, teaching tools, and techniques.
- Visits each patient and family to assess coping and create an individualized plan to support patients during their stay. Including support with procedures, managing behaviors, development, new diagnoses, and emotional expression.
- Develops teaching and/or training materials related to the short and long-term planned curriculum for the Child Life Program.
- Creates and maintains relationships with community organizations to obtain donations and involvement in referral programs for patients and families.
- Advocates for distraction and pain management techniques to be used to alternatively manage patient's procedural and chronic pain.
- Develops reviews and disseminates information, including policy and procedures that affects patient support activities of the Child Life Program to other professional staff of the hospital and/or visiting organizations, volunteers, institutions or community outreach.
- Cooperates and functions as part of the health care team, working with the team to coordinate information to share observations of patients' and families' emotional health and to promote parent-child interactions.
- Responsible for the personnel relations and supervision of individuals affiliated with the Child Life Program as delegated. Hires, trains, and supports volunteers and child life students enrolled in the Child Life Program.
- Provides specialized knowledge of Child Life to other teaching or administrative staff members as consulting and multi disciplinary health care team members.
- Coordinates and supervises the overall financial, personnel, and patient support services within the Child Life Program within Emergency Services.
- Participates actively in professional organizations and professional development experiences to enrich the child's life practice and development of long-range goals in the emergency department.
- Establishes comfortable relationships with families to ease their adjustments to the hospital while supporting family bonds and utilizing family strengths in the care of the child.
- Provides orientation to the unit and resources available so the patient and family can understand their healthcare experiences and personnel.
- Maintains and encourages effective channels of open communication.
- Documents regularly in medical chart to communicate with staff and provides positive reinforcement through verbal and written communication appropriate to foster job enrichment, satisfaction, and employee motivation.
- Takes initiative and explores opportunities to better improve the experiences for children in the emergency department.
- Supervises the continued implementation of the Child Life Program via Overall training and supervision of the Emergency Services areas and the assigned staff, ex. Student Nurse Assistants, Nursing Technicians, Community Workers, New Residents, Volunteers, etc., as work is related to the functioning of the Child Life Program.
- Participates in the evaluation and practical training of the above nursing and volunteering staff.
- Develops individual treatment plans based on an assessment of the child's development, coping styles, temperament, medical plan, and available social supports; developmental assessments may be used on standardized scales.
- Participates with orientation and review of personnel policies with Child Life volunteers.
- Provided supervision, teaching, and in-services to assisting staff, students and community workers.
- Assist with identification, developments, and initiation of a request for additions, and other changes to the Child Life Program: Reconciled credits to the Child Life Program accounts.
- Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement activities within Emergency Services.
- May assist with other duties and locations as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required: 1. A. Bachelor's degree with a major in the social or behavioral science or related health specialty from an accredited college or university.
OR
B. Master's degree in social or behavioral science or related health specialty area from an accredited college or university.
2. One (1) year (12 months) of progressively more responsible full-time experience in the practice of social services/ agencies or medical/clinical setting maintaining acceptable standards of social work practices
Preferred Qualifications: - Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Human Development, Child Development, Child Life, or related field
- Child Life Specialist certification
- Previous experience with children services
- Previous experience in an academic medical center setting
- Previous experience in a leadership role
