Department Summary
The School of Music and Dance (SOMD) is comprised of the departments of academic music, music performance, and dance. The school has an enrollment of more than 800 music and dance majors and minors, a faculty and staff of 85, and approximately 70 graduate employees. A wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs are offered, from the baccalaureate through the doctorate, including programs in dance, music performance, collaborative piano, music education, composition, theory, musicology, jazz studies, piano and string pedagogy, conducting, music technology, and music with a liberal arts emphasis.
The school is known for being the only comprehensive school of music and dance in the state of Oregon. It is also home to the internationally recognized Oregon Bach Festival and ChamberMusic @ Beall performance series.
SOMD hosts a World Music Series, Music Today, Musicking Conference, Summer Camp for Computer Music, and Jazz Camps. The comprehensive nature of the school’s curriculum, program, and outreach is supported by a commitment to diversity in the recruitment of students, faculty, and staff.
Position Summary (updated)
The School of Music and Dance invites applications for visiting faculty positions at the rank of Instructor, Senior Instructor I, Senior Instructor II, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, or Professor of Practice. The school will award faculty teaching positions, each lasting from one term to a full academic year, as needs arise.
We seek performers and scholars who bring an ability to translate practice into the learning environment by teaching applied lessons, studio classes, coaching, conducting ensembles, preparing students for recitals and juries, and/or teaching established courses in music or dance. Candidates should be strongly committed to quality undergraduate and graduate instruction, service to students, and adding value to the school.
We have a particular interest in applicants whose teaching, scholarship, or creative activity aligns with one or more of the areas within a department.
Department of Music Performance: brass, conducting, jazz studies, keyboard, piano and string pedagogy, percussion, popular music, strings, voice/choral and opera, and woodwinds.
Department of Academic Music: composition, music education, music technology, musicology and ethnomusicology, and theory and musicianship.
Department of Dance: African, ballet, contemporary, contact improvisation, hip hop, improvisation, jazz, salsa, and dance theory courses. Positions may also be available for musical accompaniment for technique classes.

Minimum Requirements
Instructor (Visiting)
o Master’s degree in a relevant field
o 1-3 years of relevant university- level teaching experience or professional experience
Senior Instructor I (Visiting)
o Master’s degree in a relevant field
o 4-6 years of relevant university- level teaching experience or professional experience OR
o Same rank held at another university
Senior Instructor II (Visiting)
o Master’s degree in a relevant field
o 7 years of relevant university- level teaching experience or professional experience OR
o Same rank held at another university
Assistant Professor (Visiting):
o Master’s degree in a relevant field
o Relevant university- level teaching experience or professional experience
Associate Professor (Visiting):
o Master’s degree in a relevant field
o 6 years of relevant university- level teaching experience or professional experience OR
o Same rank held at another university
Professor (Visiting):
o Terminal degree in a relevant field
o 12 years of relevant university- level teaching experience or professional experience OR
o Same rank held at another university
Professor of Practice (Visiting):
o Master’s degree or performer’s certificate in a relevant field
o Significant professional experience in a relevant field (level must be equivalent to that of a full professor)

o Ability to contribute effectively to a faculty team dedicated to creating a positive, dynamic, and inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications
o Preference will be given to applicants who hold a DMA and/or demonstrated teaching experience.
